First thing’s first: what is a Medicare Number? Your Medicare Number is the mix of numbers and letters on the front of your Medicare card. If you have Original Medicare, you use this card to file all Part A and Part B claims, which ties those claims to you.
You also use this number to enroll in a Medigap plan, Part D drug plan, or Medicare Advantage Part C plan…so it’s pretty important.
If you never received your Medicare card or lost it…you can quickly access your Medicare number online to show proof of coverage.
You can get your Medicare number via your My Social Security account or My Medicare account (see below).
Once you login to your SSA.gov account, your Medicare number is located in what’s called your Benefit Verification Letter.
The Benefit Verification Letter summarizes the Medicare and/or Social Security benefits you’re currently receiving. Specific to Medicare, it will show your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) start dates, as well as your Medicare number. This letter is proof of Medicare coverage and can be used in place of your Medicare card, if you can’t find your card.
Step #1: Login to your account at ssa.gov
Step #2: Click on the “Your Benefit Verification Letter” link on your main account dashboard. The link is situated in a different spot, based on whether you’re receiving both Medicare and Social Security benefits…OR…Medicare only. See images below for your particular situation:
IMPORTANT NOTE: You need your Medicare number to create a My Medicare account. So this route only works if you’ve already created a Medicare.gov account in the past, but have lost your Medicare card.
Once you login to your Medicare.gov account, your Medicare number is easily accessible in just a few clicks.
Step #1: Login to your account at medicare.gov
Step #2: In the “What do you want to do?” section, you will see an option that says Get my Medicare card. Click that link.
